Cervical Health Awareness Month & Events in January

January is National Cervical Health Awareness Month; a time to highlight cervical cancer, treatment and screenings.  Each year, approximately 12,000 women are diagnosed with cervical cancer in the United States. Yet cervical cancer is one of the most preventable cancers today. In most cases cervical cancer can be prevented through early detection and treatment of abnormal cell changes that occur in the cervix years before cervical cancer develops.  First Choice Health Centers is proud to offer affordable PAP testing at our Women’s Health Center located at 110 Connecticut Boulevard in East Hartford.  We accept Medicare, Medicaid, HUSKY, Private Insurance as well as uninsured patients and offers a sliding fee discount program.  For more information or to book a Cervical Cancer Screening please contact our Women’s Health Team at 860-528-1359.

Spanish Speaking Nutrition Class - Topics discussed will be Nutrition labels, basic nutrients, portion sizes, diabetes, and tips for eating healthy on the go.  Intended for Spanish speaking participants only.

January 12th 4:00 - 5:00pm
Diabetes Class for those recently diagnosed with prediabetes/diabetes or have questions and would like help controlling your blood sugar.

January 18th 4:00 – 5:30pm

January 24th 3:00 – 4:00pm
Parents as Teachers presents The Family Literacy at East Hartford Public Library; 840 Main Street, East Hartford, CT to educate Parents on the importance of reading to their children and how this helps keep families engaged in the child’s development.  This family-centered engagement helps to promote reading, strong readers and build creative imagination through reading stories and having “Story Time”.

AREA PROVIDER RECEIVES DOCTORATE DEGREE FROM DUKE UNIVERSITY

DURHAM, N.C. -- Duke University has awarded 388 undergraduate, graduate and professional degrees to students who completed their studies this summer.  Many of the students participated previously in the school’s annual commencement ceremony on May 15, 2016.

The following local student was among those to receive degrees:
Amma Kwakye, DNP, APRN, CPNP
Doctor of Nursing Practice

The recent graduate practices pediatrics and adolescent health at First Choice Health Centers located at 110 Connecticut Boulevard in East Hartford.  Amma grew up in East Hartford and remains committed to improving the health and well-being of those living in East Hartford.  Her father was a founding board member of the health center 20 years ago and she continues the legacy of his commitment to high quality affordable community-based health care.
