National Women's Health Week is May 8th to the 14th

Empowering women to make their health a priority 

It's never too early or late to work toward being your healthiest you! This National Women's Health Week, First Choice Health Centers encourages you to take steps to improve your health and schedule your annual well women visit with our Women’s Health Department at 860-528-1359. 

During your visit, it is important to be an active participant in your health care and talk to your provider about your overall wellness, health screenings and vaccinations you may need. 

Use this checklist as a reference during your well woman visit:

                 Do I plan to have children in the next year or the right birth control for me

                 My weight, diet, and physical activity level

                 My tobacco and alcohol use

                 Any violence in my life

                 Depression and any other mental health concerns

                 My family health history

                 Peri-Menopause/Menopause symptoms

                 Mammogram

                 Blood pressure

                 Diabetes

                 Cholesterol

                 Flu

                 Hepatitis B and hepatitis C

                 HIV

                 HPV (26 and younger*)

                 Pap (21 and older*)

                 Sexually transmitted infections (including chlamydia and gonorrhea tests for women 24 and younger*)

May 4: Billings Forge Farmers Market
11:30 – 1:00 p.m.  Meet us at the farmers market and bring your SNAP card!  You’ll get DOUBLE your money’s worth up to $20; (give $20 and get $40 to spend at the market.  559 Broad Street, Hartford.

May 8: Gentle Yoga

2:30 – 3:30 p.m. Gentle Yoga, led by Cassie Marcheggiani, LCSW,  incorporates meditation, breath work, mindfulness and stress reduction techniques with asana movement to assist individuals find emotional regulation in mind, body and soul.  To participate please call Rhonda at 860-610-6129 to schedule an initial visit with Cassie to assess for group appropriateness.  Located at 92 Connecticut Blvd, East Hartford

May 11: Prediabetes Workshop
3:00 - 4:30 p.m. Learn how you can avoid or delay Type 2 diabetes with our Certified Diabetes Nurse -Educator, Gina Dulak.  Please call 860-610-6385 to register.  Event will be held at 94 Connecticut Blvd, East Hartford.

May 16th: Container Garden
3:30 - 4:30 p.m. Make & take home your own grow-able container garden!

May 17: Yoga
3:00 – 4:30 p.m. Relax with meditation breathing and stretching exercises.

May 18: Prenatal Yoga
11:30 - 1:00 p.m.  Learn prenatal stretches to become more flexible, keep your muscles loose, and feel more relaxed during pregnancy.

Cervical Health Awareness Month & Events in January

January is National Cervical Health Awareness Month; a time to highlight cervical cancer, treatment and screenings.  Each year, approximately 12,000 women are diagnosed with cervical cancer in the United States. Yet cervical cancer is one of the most preventable cancers today. In most cases cervical cancer can be prevented through early detection and treatment of abnormal cell changes that occur in the cervix years before cervical cancer develops.  First Choice Health Centers is proud to offer affordable PAP testing at our Women’s Health Center located at 110 Connecticut Boulevard in East Hartford.  We accept Medicare, Medicaid, HUSKY, Private Insurance as well as uninsured patients and offers a sliding fee discount program.  For more information or to book a Cervical Cancer Screening please contact our Women’s Health Team at 860-528-1359.

Diabetes Class for those recently diagnosed with prediabetes/diabetes or have questions and would like help controlling your blood sugar.

January 24th 3:00 – 4:00pm
Parents as Teachers presents The Family Literacy at East Hartford Public Library; 840 Main Street, East Hartford, CT to educate Parents on the importance of reading to their children and how this helps keep families engaged in the child’s development.  This family-centered engagement helps to promote reading, strong readers and build creative imagination through reading stories and having “Story Time”.

AREA PROVIDER RECEIVES DOCTORATE DEGREE FROM DUKE UNIVERSITY

DURHAM, N.C. -- Duke University has awarded 388 undergraduate, graduate and professional degrees to students who completed their studies this summer.  Many of the students participated previously in the school’s annual commencement ceremony on May 15, 2016.

The following local student was among those to receive degrees:

Doctor of Nursing Practice

The recent graduate practices pediatrics and adolescent health at First Choice Health Centers located at 110 Connecticut Boulevard in East Hartford.  Amma grew up in East Hartford and remains committed to improving the health and well-being of those living in East Hartford.  Her father was a founding board member of the health center 20 years ago and she continues the legacy of his commitment to high quality affordable community-based health care.
